Jude Thaddeus is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus (Luke 6: 16, Mk 3:18, Mt 10: 3). In the Scripture, he was referred to as the brother (Cousin) of Jesus Mt 13: 55). Besides, St. Jude preached the Gospel with zeal in difficult regions – Syria, Mesopotamia, Armenia, and Lybia.

Traditionally, the holy Apostle, St. Jude Thaddeus is depicted with a flame of fire on his head, the image of Jesus on one hand, and staff on the other. The tongue of fire reminds us that he received the Holy Spirit with the rest of the Apostles (Acts: 2: 3). The image of Christ he often carries recalls one of Christ’s miracles which he wrought through St. Jude. Kong Abagar of Edessa had an incurable sickness – Leprosy – but believing that nothing was impossible to Jesus, he asked Jesus to cure him of his Leprosy. Since he could not come to Jesus, he sent an artist to bring him a drawing of Jesus. Moved by this kings show of great faith, Jesus pressed his face on a cloth, leaving the image to Abagar and cured him. This explains why he is often depicted carrying the miraculous face of Jesus. Secondly, St. Jude is depicted holding a staff. Why? The staff is the symbol of his martyrdom (death) for he was clubbed to death in about 65 AD for the sake of the Gospel.

After his death, the faithful notice that the Lord Jesus continues to use St. jude to bring succor to those in hopeless situations as he did to the leprous king. As people who were in desperate situations and turned to St. Jude have often received speedy help from heaven, devotion to St. Jude continues to spread. With this, St. Jude has come to be known universally as the PATRON OF HOPELESS AND DIFFICULT CASES. Nothing is too difficult for St. Jude to as God, for where there is prayer, there is hope.

We stand before you, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in your name. With you alone to guide us, make yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinfull; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in you our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.
All this we ask of you, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever.
